To ensure that background noise does not interrupt the call, many  HP | Poly headsets include a noise cancelling microphone boom. These booms include a special directional dual port microphone that picks up sound in a specific pattern that is focused towards the user’s mouth. Sounds that come from all directions, such as background noise, are picked up with equal amplitude on both microphone ports and hence cancel each other out, reducing the background noise heard by the far end (the caller/s).

To provide the best noise reduction the optimum position for a noise canceling microphone boom is directly in front of the user’s mouth. Since this can be distracting to the user, as its in their eyeline, a compromise is made so that the microphone boom is typically located at the corner of the mouth. The microphone booms can be bent so that the microphone is in the correct position.

HP | Poly ACOUSTIC FENCE TECHNOLOGY

Transmit noise reduction can be enhanced when additional, physically-separated microphones are added, such as those on HP | Poly headsets with Acoustic Fence Technology.

Single additional microphone:

Poly’s Acoustic Fence Technology, as found in the Blackwire 8225, uses a long noise cancelling microphone boom with an additional microphone located on the ear cup. This additional microphone picks up the background noise, and using DSP this noise is minimised from the user’s voice.

Multiple additional microphones:

The Voyager Focus 2 provides even greater transmit noise reduction despite its shorter microphone boom. In this implementation Poly’s Acoustic Fence Technology uses four microphones in total–two microphones on the boom and one on each ear cup–to create a virtual pick up bubble focused at the front of the user’s mouth. Anything outside of this bubble (typically noise) is ignored.

CLOSE CONVERSATION LIMITING

Using proprietary Digital Signal Processing (DSP) HP | Poly can further reduce any transmit noise. The HP | Poly Savi 8200 Series uses a noise cancelling microphone boom plus a feature called close conversation limiting, which is designed to reduce the level of nearby conversations. The actual level of noise reduction can be configured via HP | Poly software.

NOISE CANCELLING MICROPHONE BOOMLESS

For products without a microphone boom such as the Voyager Free 60 UC, Voyager Surround 80 UC, and Voyager 6200 UC, multiple microphones are used along with beam-forming technology to focus on the user’s voice while minimising background noise.

Boomless noise cancelling refers to a technology or design approach used in certain communication devices, such as headsets or earbuds, that eliminates

the need for a physical boom microphone while still providing effective noise cancellation.

Traditionally, headsets uses a microphone boom to capture the user's voice for clear communication. However, boomless noise cancelling utilizes

advanced algorithms and microphone arrays strategically placed within the device to capture and isolate the user's voice while minimizing background

noise.

The technology leverages beamforming and other signal processing techniques to focus on the user's voice and filter out unwanted noise from the

surrounding environment. This allows for clear and intelligible communication, even in noisy conditions, without the need for a visible boom microphone.

HP | Poly WINDSMART TECHNOLOGY

Poly’s WindSmart Technology is a proprietary technology developed for wireless headset products. WindSmart is designed to reduce the impact of wind noise during phone calls or voice communication in outdoor environments. It employs advanced algorithms and microphone design to suppress wind noise and deliver clearer audio quality to the listener. WindSmart Technology helps improve the overall voice clarity and user experience, particularly in windy conditions.

Active Noise Cancelling (ANC)

Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) is a technology used in headphones, earbuds, or other audio devices to reduce unwanted ambient noise. It works by using built in microphones to capture external sounds and then generating anti noise signals to cancel out those unwanted sounds. Here's how active noise cancelling works:

1. Microphone Pickup: The device's microphones capture the surrounding sounds, including ambient noise such as traffic, airplane engines, or office chatter.

2. Anti-Noise Generation: The captured sounds are analyzed by the ANC system, which generates sound waves that are the exact opposite of the incoming noise.

3. Anti-Noise Playback: The generated anti noise signals are played through the device's speakers simultaneously with the audio you want to listen to.

4. Noise Cancellation: When the anti-noise signals combine with the ambient noise, they cancel each other out, reducing the overall level of unwanted noise reaching your ears.

By actively countering external noise, ANC helps create a quieter and more immersive audio experience. It is particularly useful in environments with constant or repetitive background noise, allowing users to enjoy their music, podcasts, or calls without the distraction of surrounding sounds.

Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling

With Hybrid ANC additional microphones are placed outside the earcup (in addition to the microphones inside the earcup) that measures both what the user hears and the background noise, this allows a wider frequency of background noise to be reduce while maintaining more natural sidetone for the user during calls.

Hybrid ANC, or Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation, is a technology used in certain headphones or earbuds to reduce unwanted ambient noise. It combines multiple methods or approaches to achieve effective noise cancellation.

In Hybrid ANC, two or more techniques are typically employed together to cancel out noise. This can involve acombination of active noise cancellation (ANC) and passive noise isolation.

Active noise cancellation involves the use of microphones that pick up external sounds and generate corresponding anti-noise signals. These signals are then played back through the headphones or earbuds, effectively canceling out the incoming noise.

Passive noise isolation, on the other hand, relies on the physical design of the headphones or earbuds to block

out ambient noise. This can be achieved using well fitted ear tips or ear cups that create a seal around the ears, preventing external sounds from entering.

By combining active and passive methods, Hybrid ANC aims to provide a more comprehensive and effective noise cancellation experience. It can effectively reduce both low frequency and high frequency noise, resulting in improved audio clarity and a more immersive listening environment.

Adaptive Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling

Additionally to ANC and Hybrid ANC, the latest technology in ANC is adaptive hybrid ANC that automatically adjusts to your wearing style and cancels out just the right amount of noise for a quiet and comfortable experience. So whether it’s a crowded cafe or bustling commute, forget the commotion around you. And with two setting transparency mode, you can tune back into your natural surroundings.

Adaptive Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation, also known as Adaptive Hybrid ANC, is an advanced technology used in certain headphones or earbuds. It combines elements of both active noise cancellation (ANC) and passive noise isolation to provide an effective noise reduction experience.

In Adaptive Hybrid ANC, the headphones or earbuds utilize external microphones to pick up ambient sounds and generate anti-noise signals that cancel out unwanted noise. At the same time, the design of the physical ear cups or ear tips also helps in blocking out noise passively by creating a seal around the ears.

The "adaptive" aspect of Adaptive Hybrid ANC refers to the technology's ability to intelligently adjust the level of noise cancellation based on the environment. It can analyze the surrounding noise in real time and dynamically optimize the ANC performance to offer the most suitable level of noise reduction.

By combining the active and passive noise cancellation techniques, Adaptive Hybrid ANC aims to provide a highly customizable and effective noise reduction experience. It can offer superior audio clarity by minimizing both low frequency and high frequency background noise, resulting in an immersive and uninterrupted listening experience.
